STAR Design-Build Honored with Two 2010 Excellence in Construction Awards of Merit
AMHERST, OH (December 22, 2010) – STAR Design-Build was recently honored with two 2010 Excellence in Construction Awards of Merit from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), Northern Ohio Chapter. The Excellence in Construction Awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects and safety programs.
The company received the award for their outstanding work on the Holy Love Church project in Elyria, Ohio and the National Bronze and Metals project in Sheffield Village, Ohio.
Holy Love Church selected STAR to design and construct their new 55,000 square foot facility with a welcome center, worship building, dormitory and restroom facilities. The design-build method of delivery was well suited to match the church’s needs of stick frame, laminated wood arch frame and brick veneer construction.
STAR completed the 115,000 square foot addition to the National Bronze and Metals foundry by expanding and modernizing the existing warehouse to include an office, a warehouse and foundry. They used several different methods of construction to best match the needs of the project: tilt up concrete, steel building and wood construction. Although this was a very complex design challenge, because STAR’s efficient design-build process included intensive up-front planning to smooth the coordination of the building phase, the entire project took just 21 months. STAR attributes this outstanding accomplishment to the experience, dedication and commitment of their in-house design team and construction managers.
The winning projects are judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. ABC's Awards of Excellence Program has become the premiere competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the nation. STAR Design-Build was recognized for their work in the commercial category which includes office buildings, banks, retail facilities, hotels, mixed use buildings and museums.

STAR Design-Build Takes Mission Trip to Haiti
Design-Build Experts Lend Knowledge and Hard Work to Create New Storage & Sale Facility
AMHERST, OH (February 24, 2010) – STAR Design-Build, a design build contractor in Amherst, Ohio, has joined forces with Double Harvest Haiti to build an industrial cooler and produce stand that allows for improved food storage and expanded produce sales capacity. The project is designed to subsidize the operations of Double Harvest’s 200-acre farm in Croix des Bouquets, outside Port-au-Prince.
“We’re looking forward to working with Double Harvest to provide the cooler and its attached produce stand,” said Kim Mulder, president of STAR Design-Build. “Our tilt-up concrete construction is perfect for a building like this, because it is fast and cost effective. Having storage and sales facilities will help Double Harvest make the most of their harvests.”
In March of 2009, the initial team began the site assessment in Haiti and unloaded the first container of equipment and supplies. More employees followed completing the foundation and concrete floors. STAR will follow up with additional trips to finish the project as soon as current conditions allow.
The cooler will be built by 15 STAR employees, using the company’s extensive experience with tilt-up concrete construction. It will be resistant to tropical pests, will feature thick, well-insulated construction to maintain the freshness of food, and will be built to withstand hurricane-force winds and an 8.0 on the Richter scale.
The cooler is needed to prevent food grown on the Double Harvest farm from spoiling in Haiti’s warm climate before it can be preserved or consumed. The cooler, which will be located at a major intersection half an hour from Port-au-Prince, will let the Double Harvest staff keep food fresh for later use or sale to members of the community, and the produce stand will allow staff to sell produce to residents of the Croix des Bouquets area.
Double Harvest is a Christian ministry, and seeks to minister to the spiritual and physical needs of people in developing countries. Double Harvest also seeks to model Christ’s compassion by offering economic, educational and medical programs in difficult and impoverished situations. In addition to the farm, Double Harvest also operates a school and a clinic, and offers housing to Haitian women and children.

STAR Design-Build Completes New Medical Facility 45 Days Ahead of Schedule
Design-Build Experts' Tilt-Up Concrete Method Streamlines Construction Process
AMHERST, OH (August 14, 2009) – STAR Design-Build, a design build contractor in Amherst, Ohio, has completed a new facility for Northern Ohio Medical Specialists (NOMS) in Sandusky, Ohio. The new 3-story healthcare facility was constructed using STAR’s tilt-up construction method and features medical offices, wellness labs, testing labs, and advanced medical service providers.
“The NOMS facility had a variety of special construction needs, since it includes not only standard office spaces, but also wellness facilities and testing labs,” said Kim Mulder, President of STAR Design Build. “Our tilt-up construction method allowed us to give NOMS a facility that’s tailored to their diverse set of needs, with less time and expense than traditional construction methods.”
The 3-story facility will employ 300 medical professionals initially, and will include offices for NOMS practitioners, an Advanced Health facility, and a Quest Diagnostics testing lab. It features medical offices, a diagnostic imaging center, and a wellness center with an indoor pool and an elevated track.
Thanks to the efficiency of STAR’s tilt-up concrete construction method, the NOMS building was completed 45 days ahead of schedule. The facility’s grand opening celebration and open house were held August 6 at 2500 West Strub Road in Sandusky, Ohio.

STAR Design-Build Completes Avon Lake Pet Spa
New Facility Features Private Suites, Lazy River, and Indoor/Outdoor Play Area
AMHERST, OH (December 15, 2008) – STAR Design-Build recently completed work on a new facility for Avon Lake Animal Care Center. The new building features indoor and outdoor play areas and a lazy river pool for pets.
The project would not have been possible without gaining local zoning approval, a valuable part of STAR’s process. The land where the Center stands was originally zoned for residential, not commercial use, a common hurdle which STAR can help their customers overcome. They worked proactively to convince local residents and city officials to allow the zoning change so that Avon Lake Animal Care Center owner Dr. Jim Haddad could create a “campus” featuring the Animal Care Center and the affiliated Avon Lake Animal Clinic.
“We wanted to open a pet spa to complement our veterinary practice, and we needed a very specialized facility to provide the desired level of service to our customers and their pets,” said Dr. Haddad. “Working with STAR’s on-staff architect helped us get exactly the layout we wanted, and their help navigating the zoning process was invaluable.”
The 24,800 square-foot pre-engineered steel building features uniquely designed suites with private play areas, a pet apparel shop, and indoor and outdoor fenced playgrounds. The spa is located at 33757 Lake Road in Avon Lake, and the affiliated Avon Lake Animal Clinic is right across the street, offering standard veterinary care and 24-hour care in emergencies.

STAR Tilt-up Wins International Award
The EMH Sheffield Medical Center, designed and constructed by Star Inc., has been selected as a winning project for its category in the annual Tilt-Up Achievement Awards Program sponsored by the Tilt-up Concrete Association (TCA.)
The TCA Achievement Awards program honors projects that use site cast Tilt-Up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology and provide unique solutions to building programs. The winning entries illustrate the variety, beauty, and flexibility of the Tilt-Up construction concept, as well as Tilt-Up's unique ability to get the job done faster and for less money. Additional criteria include: project complexity, how construction challenges were overcome, design attributes and features, and how the project promotes tilt-up construction.
TCA has members in all 50 States, Canada, Mexico and throughout many other countries including the United Kingdom.
Star President Kim Mulder is very pleased, “It’s great news to hear that our design and construction professionals can compete on such a scale – even moreso considering that we first delved into tilt-up construction only five years ago!”
The EMH building is a 50,000 sq. ft., 3-story medical facility, located on Rte 254, just west of the I-90 interchange. A sweeping, curvilinear glass curtain wall encloses an impressive atrium. Along with corner towers and the contrasting brick façade, the striking appearance makes it a prominent landmark near the busy intersection. It currently houses the Center for Orthopedics, with other medical groups in discussion for future occupancy.
